The importance of the family unit is a value that is second only to their faith in God. Having children is seen as a blessing, and this means that the Amish have large families.  SOURCE: https://amishrules.com/amish-values/

Large families and strong retention rates propel the growth. On average, Amish families have about five children, but it’s not unusual for them to have ten or more. Typically, 85 percent or more of the youth join the church. (A few members do leave after baptism; defection rates vary from community to community.) Although the Amish do not seek converts, outsiders may join if they comply with Amish guidelines. Several dozen outsiders have done so.

The world is currently facing a global fertility collapse. Many countries around the world have a fertility rate below replacement level (less than 2.1 fertility rate), which will affect their country’s population and economy in the future. No population means no country.

However, these countries/continents have high fertility rates and will probably outgrow those other low fertility. They are Sub-Sahara Africa, Israel, Faroe Islands, Mongolia, and Tibet and last, last but not least…. the Amish and other Plain People Groups like Beachy Amish Mennonites, Conservative Mennonites, Hutterites and the haredi jews.

The truth is even the other Anabaptist groups like the Beachy Amish-Mennonites, Conservative Mennonites and Hutterites all follow the Four core values of the Amish, that is why they have large families, with an average of four or more children each.

Family is the heart of the community and is a very important social unit in the Amish culture. Amish place great value on time spent together as a family and their connection with each other. They run family businesses together, eat meals together, attend church services, barn-raisings, and other community events together. It’s not unusual for an Amish family to have seven to ten children. You’ll often see young children helping at market stands, picking corn, or tending to animals. Amish families approach life as a unit and children learn a strong work ethic from the very beginning.

The dedication to family continues with older family members. Wisdom from older Amish is valued by the young and often multiple generations live together to either help care for aging family members and/or help with the rearing of children. These large multi-generational family units contribute to the strength and growth of the extended family and ultimately to their community.

“There are two explanatory factors: one is large families, and the second is high retention rates,” said Professor Steven Nolt, Director and Senior Scholar at the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College. “If you looked at the 1930s, up through about 2000, the retention rate had actually increased. There’s a case study that showed that the retention rate went from the upper 70 percent to 90 percent,” he said.

I believe the Amish (even Beachy Amish Mennonites, Conservative Mennonites and Hutterites) will outgrow us despite low global fertility issue. In 2022, In its annual Amish population study, the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College estimates that 1,450 Amish babies were born in Lancaster County last year. Only 145 Amish of all ages died. That population increase of 1,305 brought the total number of Amish living here to 44,315. There were more Amish births than deaths in that state.

Amish are growing rapidly in number and staying put [The Scribbler]

Is Lancaster County’s Amish population still increasing rapidly or, because of development pressure, beginning to level off as families move to greener pastures?

In fact, the number of Amish increases annually at a rate far greater than the general population.

A nice shot of ten Amish school boys lined up for a photo in what must be Lancaster County. Someone local with a better eye for buildings might be able to tell the location going by the brick structure in the background, which appears to be a church. This is undated, but I suspect this photo is also circa 1960s. If so, that means these smiling kids are grandpas and great-grandpas today. I wonder if any remember this shot being taken, or are aware they happen to be on a vintage postcard.

In its annual Amish population study, the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College estimates that 1,450 Amish babies were born in Lancaster County last year. Only 145 Amish of all ages died. That population increase of 1,305 brought the total number of Amish living here to 44,315.

The Lancaster County figures include Amish living in the greater Amish settlement, so several hundred of those people live in Chester, York and Berks counties in Pennsylvania and Cecil County, Maryland. This is the largest settlement of Amish in North America.

The Amish population in Lancaster County is growing far faster than the county’s population as a whole, roughly doubling every 20 years.

From 2000 to 2023, the county’s Amish population increased from about 16,900 to 44,315 — a 160% increase. Meanwhile, Lancaster County’s overall population grew from 470,658 to an estimated 563,046 — a comparatively modest 20% increase.

There are two primary reasons for the difference in population rates, according to the Young Center report.

Amish have “sizable nuclear families (five or more children on average) and a retention rate (Amish children who join the church as young adults) of 85% or more.’’

Back in the 1980s, when the county’s population was rising more rapidly than now, some observers predicted that the county’s overall population would increase so fast that many Amish might be forced to go elsewhere to find land to farm in the 21st century.

That has not happened. Few Amish leave this area. The Amish have adapted more readily than expected to the substantial countywide growth that has occurred. In much of the county, the Amish buy every available farm, and they have thrived in other businesses.

Many Amish mothers prefer to bear their children in the comfort of the home

Where Are Amish Babies Born? (3 Places)

Amish children are born in hospitals, birthing centers – and at home

Why some Amish prefer home birth:

1.    Cost – Amish do not carry commercial insurance, and Amish females typically have 6-8 or more children

2.    Comfort – the home environment offers more comfort, and midwives and local doctors often better understand Amish culture

3.    Closeness – giving birth at home or in a local birthing center allows a mother to be near family

This phrase means that as parents, we want to give our children a strong sense of identity and belonging ("roots") while also providing them with the ability to be independent and explore new opportunities ("wings") - essentially grounding them in their heritage while also encouraging them to reach their full potential.

Yes, the family is like a forest, when you are outside it is dense, when you're inside you see that each tree has its place. When you look from afar the forest appears to be like one compact unit. The same is true of a family. A true family is one. They are united against whatever threatens their bond of unity. Whatever affects one member affects all because they care about one another. The reason they are united is because each member plays his or her distinct role effectively and cooperatively. It's not that they love each member equally. No, they don't. In fact they may even hate what some members do. It's like what happens in an ant colony. When we look from outside at an ant colony we see a beautiful display of teamwork. But a closer inspection, according to scientific findings reveals that the species "hate each other" (source livescience.com). But you see, when there is work to be done, or an enemy to conquer, they put their differences aside to fight for the common good. They have different personalities but one purpose: to work for the common good. We don't have to lose our uniqueness in the quest for unity. We only need to lose our selfishness. Be unique!

African Proverb: If relatives help each other, what evil can hurt them

Meaning: Someone may say, well even if I help my family evil people out there can still hurt us, if they choose. But such thought would stem from a misunderstanding of the proverb. The catch word is ‘relatives’. Truth be told, we are all relatives: related to another by common descent. They say blood is thicker than water, but I say love is thicker than both. Love is the foundation of all virtues. Thus, the opposite of love is not hate. The opposite of love is all vices. Because in the absence of love, any vice is inevitable. We cannot afford to sit on the fence. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men should do nothing” (Edmond Burke). Further more the word ‘relate’, out of which we get the “relatives”, means to understand or sympathize with something or someone. And that provides further clarity on who our relatives are. They are the people who don’t just ask ‘how are you?’ and walk away but actually pause to listen to how you really are. They are those who even when they don’t have material things to give, give their time, encouragement, attention and respect, honesty and loyalty. There is an Akan proverb that says, your relatives are not those who send you their best wishes but those who actually visit you. There is a friend that sticks closer than a brother. And there are brothers who are worse than enemies. But when relatives help each other, they are able to hurt evil. Be helpful! #AfricanProverb #TagAFriendToReadThis #EthiopianProverb
